5-Day HSR Course

SafeWork NSW approved

This Course if for Elected Health and Safety Representatives.
For the purposes of section 72 (1) of the WHS Act 2011 NSW, a HSR is entitled to attend the following courses of training in work health and safety:
  • An initial course of training of 5 days.
  • 1 day’s refresher training each year, with the entitlement to the first refresher training commencing 1 year after the initial training.

Please Note: This course is not a VET course and therefore is not what is known as “Nationally Recognized Training” (NRT) by the government (ASQA)

Training Content

This training covers the following topics:
  • WHS legislative framework.
  • Issue resolution, support for HSRs and managing risks.
  • Workplace inspections, notifiable incidents and incident Investigation.
  • Consultation, representation and participation.
  • PIN's and directing unsafe work to cease.

Training Outcomes

  • An understanding of the NSW WHS legislation.
  • An understanding of how the legislation applies to their role as elected HSRs and Deputy HSRs.
  • The knowledge and skills necessary to use their additional powers under the NSW WHS legislation to issue provisional improvement notices (PIN's) and direct unsafe work to cease.

1-Day HSR Refresher Course

SafeWork NSW approved, Non Nationally Recognised Training

This Course if for Elected Health and Safety Representatives.
The 1 Day HSR Refresher training is available to HSRs who have completed the initial 5 day HSR training.

Training Content

  • Overview of the WHS legislative framework.
  • Key WHS terminology.
  • Duties of various parties.
  • The role of SafeWork NSW and penalties for non‐compliance.
  • Requirements/mechanisms for consultation in the workplace on work health and safety issues.
  • The role, entitlements and protections available for HSRs.
  • Incident notification and investigation.
  • Resolving workplace health and safety issues through negotiation and conflict resolution.
  • Issuing Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) and directing unsafe work to cease.
  • Identifying hazards and ways in which they can be eliminated or minimised.
