Health & Safety Representative (HSR) Training Courses

With over 20 years of safety management experience Coastal OHS Services delivers the SafeWork NSW approved training course for participants to gain the information and skills to assist HSRs to carry out their role and functions under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation. We can deliver this course on-site anywhere in NSW.

The 5-day HSR course

This training covers the following topics:
  • An understanding of the NSW WHS legislation.
  • An understanding of how the legislation applies to their role as elected HSRs and Deputy HSRs.
  • The knowledge and skills necessary to use their additional powers under the NSW WHS legislation to issue provisional improvement notices (PIN's) and direct unsafe work to cease.

Training Content

  • WHS legislative framework.
  • Issue resolution, support for HSRs and managing risks.
  • Workplace inspections, notifiable incidents and incident Investigation.
  • Consultation, representation and participation.
  • PIN's and directing unsafe work to cease.

Target Audience

Elected Health and Safety Representatives.
For the purposes of section 72 (1) of the WHS Act 2011 NSW, a HSR is entitled to attend the following courses of training in work health and safety:
  • An initial course of training of 5 days.
  • 1 day’s refresher training each year, with the entitlement to the first refresher training commencing 1 year after the initial training.

The 1-Day HSR Refresher Training

Training Contents

  • Overview of the WHS legislative framework.
  • Key WHS terminology.
  • Duties of various parties.
  • The role of SafeWork NSW and penalties for non‐compliance.
  • Requirements/mechanisms for consultation in the workplace on work health and safety issues.
  • The role, entitlements and protections available for HSRs.
  • Incident notification and investigation.
  • Resolving workplace health and safety issues through negotiation and conflict resolution.
  • Issuing Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) and directing unsafe work to cease.
  • Identifying hazards and ways in which they can be eliminated or minimised.

Target Audience

The 1 Day HSR Refresher training is available to HSRs who have completed the initial 5 day HSR training.
