SafeWork NSW crackdown on the Central Coast

Source: Media release, Sep 22 - Department of Customer Service NSW

SafeWork NSW has cracked-down on dangerous construction site work practices on the Central Coast. The three-day operation focused on high-risk safety harms and sub-standard building practices across 27 residential construction sites. 47 improvement notices and 7 prohibition notices were issued.

One site had two prohibition notices for potential structural form-work collapse and concerns of building quality issues. This site will now be audited by NSW Fair Trading’s building inspectors.
SafeWork Executive Director, Compliance and Dispute Resolution, Matt Press said that SafeWork and Fair Trading have had increased reach and effectiveness with their collaboration in the residential construction sector “as poor safety practices and non-compliant building work are often found together.”

Focus areas of concern for SafeWork NSW’s operation included working safely at heights, controlling risks from falling objects and structural collapse, and the prevention of respiratory diseases such as silicosis, asbestosis, and mesothelioma.
